Tuesday night, Joe and Lamar surprised Pat and I with a wonderful Valentine's day dinner at the... (can you guess?) Salt & Pepper restaurant. We went out after our weekly double header childrens choir practice - one in Asenovgrad, and one another 20-25 minutes away in Plovdiv.

Thanks to Lamar and Pat for the pictures! And thanks to Joe and Lamar for the surprise!

We had some really great weather last week, so the four of us Americans decided to go on a mini-adventure/picnic to a nearby mountain village. Joe and I can actually see the village from our house... it's barely visible on the mountain top during the day, but you can see the lights pretty well at night.

Say cheese!

We drove a ways past the village to do some exploring, and even had a picnic! The sunny weather made up for the cold breeze (although I'm sure you'll notice I had the hood up on my coat from the picture!)

A chilly mountain picnic

The picnic menu: PB&J sandwiches (thanks to Aunt Sue for the jelly!), chips, oranges, and chocolate chip cookies (thanks to Deb for the cookie mix!).... Yum!

...and guess what? Joe just felt the baby move for the first time today!

Most days, Bulgaria's beautiful landscape is covered in a haze of smog and smoke rising from the villages that are scattered across the countryside. Today, however, the layer of pollution that usually is seen on the horizon was lifted!

Looking toward Topolovo at the Rhodope mountains

We stopped on the side of the road for a few pictures. We just couldn't resist - it was SO beautiful!

Across the valley are the snow-peaked Pirin mountains

So as some of you know, we only have one heated room in our house. Our kitchen, bathroom, etc. like to remain a pretty constant average of 40 degrees.

Often in the morning I pull back the shade to find this

The window pane is completely frozen solid!

I know this doesn't compare to the SNOWPOCALYPSE I hear the US is experiencing, but I thought it was pretty cool.

As promised, here are some pictures of the costume party that we went to a couple weeks ago. It was actually a birthday party, but everyone wore costumes for extra fun!

Can you tell? We're tourists!
